SUMMER SAFETY
Adventuring?
1. Don't forget to bring water and a travel bowl. It seem like a "duh" kind of tip, but it's one that's easily forgotten.
2. Did you know that too much ice can drop a dog's temperature too low? Even in the heat of the summer, an internal body temp that dips below normal can injure your pup. Keep water cool water is great, but save the ice for your pool side beverage!
3. Watch for hot ground! If it burns your hand, it will burn the pads on your pup! Invest in a nice set of boots for your dog if you're going to be adventuring on hot pavement. Check out Ruffwear Boots; they are a Duncan Favorite!
4. Pamper your pup with a nice pair of RexSpecs! Just like us, dogs' eyes are sensitive to bright sunlight, especially bouncing off the sidewalks, sandy shores, and water! They're also great for protecting when hiking and hunting - no poked eyes here! These are also a Duncan Favorite!
5. Grab and Kong Toy and stuff it full of yogurt, carrots, peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, and more! There's lots of recipes on line. Pop it in the fridge for a bit then give your dog a tasty cool treat. It'll keep them entertained too! Double check that everything you put in it, is safe though!! Check out our page on Food Safety first!
6. Going to the beach? Avoid allowing your dog to drink the salt water. Dogs can easily get Sodium Poisoning and dehydrated in a hurry. Read this AKC article to learn all about this safety tip!
7. Hiking? Make sure to pack a Pet First Aid Kit and always keep your dog under control and/on leash or remote e-collar. Critters are every where, stay safe! We have Duncan's Favorite coming soon in our online store.
8. Lake or Beach Day? Invest in a dog life vest. Duncan wears one when we go kayaking, it's much easier to pull him back into the boat by the back handles than it would be without anything. Just like us, their muscles will fatigue if stranded in the water, unlike us they cannot tread water. Lake days are a blast around here, we do them often, always with a PFD whether we're in a boat and just splashing around!
9. If you're grilling out? Who doesn't love a good BBQ picnic? Friends, fun, good food....ahhh summer vibes! If you're cooking pork, avoid giving your dog the pork fat. It damages their liver and causes a lot of medical distress.
10. Hopefully if you're on my site you are a responsible owner and would never in a million years do this. BUT.... NEVER EVER EVER... I MEAN EVER!!!!! LEAVE YOUR DOG IN THE CAR ALONE A/C RUNNING OR NOT. Inside can easily reach 175 degrees when the air temp is only 80 outside. You will come back to either a deceased pup or some very angry people, a rescued pup, and smashed car windows from said angry people. **IF you see a dog in a car and no owner, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!!
